Sinusitis

Sinusitis is a common condition caused by inflammation of the sinuses, significantly affecting breathing and quality of life.

Sinusitis is a condition that occurs when the sinuses—air-filled cavities located around the nose—become inflamed or infected. These sinuses are present from birth, initially very small, and continue to develop during childhood and early adulthood.

The inner lining of the sinuses is similar to the lining of the nasal cavity, and they are connected to the nose through small openings. The nasal system produces approximately half a liter of mucus daily, and the sinuses contribute to this process.

Under normal conditions, mucus helps clean the nasal passages by trapping dust, bacteria, and other particles. This mucus is then naturally drained into the throat and swallowed, where harmful substances are destroyed by stomach acid.

However, when the nasal passages become blocked due to factors such as infections, allergies, or structural issues, the normal drainage of the sinuses is disrupted. As a result, mucus accumulates, and bacteria or viruses remain trapped inside the sinuses, leading to inflammation and infection—this condition is known as sinusitis.

Types of Sinusitis

  1. Acute sinusitis: Short-term infection, usually caused by viruses or bacteria
  2. Chronic sinusitis: Long-lasting inflammation, often due to persistent blockage or recurring infections

Symptoms of Sinusitis

  1. Nasal congestion
  2. Facial pain or pressure
  3. Headache
  4. Thick nasal discharge
  5. Postnasal drip
  6. Reduced sense of smell
  7. Fatigue

Causes of Sinusitis

  1. Upper respiratory infections
  2. Allergies
  3. Nasal polyps
  4. Deviated septum
  5. Environmental factors

Treatment Methods

Treatment depends on the severity and cause of the condition:

  1. Medications:Pain relievers
  2. Nasal sprays
  3. Antibiotics (if bacterial infection is present)
  4. Supportive Care:Steam inhalation
  5. Hydration
  6. Rest
  7. Surgical Treatment:
  8. In chronic or severe cases, procedures such as endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS) may be required to restore normal sinus drainage.

Early diagnosis and appropriate treatment can effectively control sinusitis and prevent complications, significantly improving quality of life.
